Farewell to my crowned king. The only living legend, whose footprints will remain in our hearts forever. A man of dignity, respect, loyalty, humility, honesty, simplicity, but most of all God fearing and loving. A man who showed us that love is unconditional, who never made boundaries no matter where you were from in Igbo land. Someone so humble that when he walked into a room he would make you feel welcomed as you stood up immediately just to greet him as a sign of respect.

Each and every one of us has a positive story to tell about Dr. Sea, especially those of us which came in the 70s. He was the father to us all that newly came. He guided us, instructed us, and led by example. He made us his family no matter if you were Igbo or Yoruba. He taught us that no matter what the circumstances were, we should never turn our back on a brother or sister in need.

As I write this I think of the many ways he impacted my family, myself in particular, I recall a time that I am forever thankful he was there. During my wedding when all hope was lost and the wedding seemed sabotaged and gloomy I felt that there was nothing that could save this special day. Dr. Sea stepped in, as he did for countless others, and picked up the pieces. He took command and coordinated the whole wedding. He made sure that it was one of the happiest days of my life. Up until now there has been no amount of thank you that has been enough to repay him.

He was there for this and many others aspects of our lives at a time when there was no Abia Imo or Anambra Enugu Associations. In fact, there were no Igbo organization at all that brought us together. There was only CHIEF DR. JULIUS ASOKWU-SEA and everything was fine. Now that you’re gone who will fill your shoes? I personally do not believe that anyone in the community can measure up to you or the things you accomplished in this community and what you meant for the community not only then but even now that you are no longer with us. Who in this community has the ability today:

  • To give moral support when you’re down
  • Immigration support when you have INS problems
  • Financial support when you lack money
  • Living support when you’re homeless

Even if you could find this person, he still could never measure up to Dr. Sea. My heart is broken, our hearts are broken. We love you but God loves you more. As my son told me as he spoke of his feelings about your passing, there is a gaping hole that has been left in the community. Uncle Julius represented the community, not just for adults but for budding young leaders in this community as well as children coming up. He represented the incentive to keep the unity of Igbo alive. He represented that when we are together as a people there is no stopping us. If we learned one thing from him it could make us a better community.

Look at Uncle and remember his Love for he loved his Igbo community and transcended state boundaries. Respect, if I respect you, you respect me. Show tolerance for each other and show the children that respect is a way to a prosperous united future. Educate & Lead, the way uncle carried himself, conducted himself, and spoke made you know he was speaking with a vast amount of knowledge and also made sure you learned something. He carried himself so well in the community that you aspired to reach the status he had. The void he left for both young and the old is immeasurable.

To the family you should know that the legacy will live forever. Our deepest condolences to you and we will forever be there for you as He continues to look over us from Heaven where we know he is. When the Iroquois tree falls it cannot be replaced, but we will take the lessons learned and tell of its legend to all so they too can know how great the tree was.

Rest in Perfect Peace, Chief Dr. Julius Asokwu-Sea: Onowu, New Jersey and Akataisiebue ni Abagana
